On November 17th in the City Hall Rotunda, the Global Leadership Advancement Center (GLAC) launched its Global Leader Breakfast Speaker Series, featuring Chris DiGiorgio, Managing Director at Accenture, Co-Chair of Joint Venture Silicon Valley and a member of the Executive Committee of the Bay Area Council, Bay Area Economic Forum board, and The Tech Museum of Innovation board. After an introduction by Mayor Chuck Reed, Mr. DiGiorgio spoke on “Leading in a Time of Globalization.” Joyce Osland, executive director, briefly presented GLAC’s goals and programs. The event, organized by Assistant Director Jeff Gaines, was attended by over 100 alumni, local business people, MBA students, outstanding IB majors, and student leaders. The event was sponsored by the Donald and Sally Lucas Foundation and Pearson Higher Education. The next speaker in the series is Nobel Laureate and economist Joseph Stiglitz on February 23, 2010.

San Jose is the nation’s top mid-size metro college destination, according to the American Institute for Economic Research College Destinations Index, 2009-2010. The index analyzes the academic environment, quality of life, and professional opportunity for more than 360 towns. “Choosing the right college isn’t just about professors and classes. Conversations in coffee houses, performances in concert halls, and opportunities for corporate internships also contribute to education,” said Kerning Liang, AIER research associate.

The College of Business recently honored three of its prominent Alumni at the annual Distinguished Alumni Dinner event on September 11th. The dinner gala was held to recognize the significant contributions made by its honorees to the business community, the College and charitable entities.
Local CPA and consultant Wanda Ginner (’68), Newspaper Mogul J.J. McClatchy (’65) and Global Businessman James Thompson (’62) were among this year’s award recipients who received accolades for their support of the College and their impact in the corporate arena.
Friends, families and College of Business cohorts all gathered to share in the celebration and dinner festivities at the renowned Sainte Claire Hotel. The Hotel Atrium provided the perfect setting for event guests to mingle and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and wine before heading to the dining area for the reception.
“Growing a Culture of Excellence” was the prominent theme for the evening. Tiny tree samplings served as party favors, encouraging guests to grow and foster themselves both personally and professionally.
Dean David Steele presented the honorees with the Distinguished Alumni Award during dinner. The awardees each said a few words about their personal experiences and how they achieved their success as well as their college experience at San Jose State University.
Pricewaterhouse Coopers, LLP donates $20,000 to the Department of Accounting & Finance via the Accounting Advisory Council (AAC). The AAC was formed in 2006 to connect the accounting firms with the students and faculty in the A&F Department. In its third year, PwC has taken the leadership role in the AAC with its contribution and participation in the council. Proceeds will be used to support AAC panel discussions, student-firm networking and social events, student scholarships, faculty research as well as to fund a Pricewaterhouse Coopers Faculty Fellow named in their honor.

Congratulations to Nancy Long on winning the HR Leadership Award in the Human Resource Excellence Awards from the 2009 HR Symposium. Nancy Long is Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer at Hitachi Data Systems, and also is an adjunct faculty member in HR in our department. On April 3rd the College of Business hosted a lunch for its alumni faculty on campus. During the lunch the faculty had the opportunity to reminisce about their time at SJSU. The faculty also met with the new Dean, Associate Deans and Chairs, who updated them on the new direction the College is headed.

This award recognizes faculty who are contributing outstanding work toward understanding and improving student learning in programs across the university.
The Provost recognizes Dominie Garcia for leading the effort to assess student performance in the Business Capstone and the Department of Accounting and Finance for their efforts to improve student learning with special recognition of Mallory McWilliams, Suresh Ahuja, Bill DeVincenzi, Janis Zaima.
Dr. Karen Philbrick has been hired as MTI’s new Research Director. She has been overlapping duties this month with Trixie Johnson, who will retire April 30 after nine years with MTI. Karen comes to us from the University of Denver, where she was assistant director with the National Center for Intermodal Transportation. She earned her Ed.M. in counseling psychology from Columbia University and her Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Denver.

San Jose, CA, April 15, 2009 – The Hon. Rod Diridon, Sr., executive director of The Mineta Transportation Institute (MTI), has been invited to participate in a public announcement of President Barack Obama’s national high-speed rail (HSR) master plan. The President’s announcement will take place at the Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House on Thursday, April 16, at 9:00 a.m. EDT. Mr. Diridon will be part of a select group of national HSR leaders attending the meeting. Rod Diridon meets President Obama (doc).
As soon as graduation ceremonies are over, twenty students from the Gary J. Sbona Honors Program are heading to Chile and Argentina for the 2009 study tour abroad. Thanks to financial support from Gary Sbona, these students will spend two weeks visiting companies and government agencies to learn about how business is conducted in these two countries.
The itinerary isn’t completely confirmed, but planned visits include a sampling of key industries and companies in the areas. A couple of examples are:
Of course, it won’t all be work. There will be time to explore the cultural aspects of Santiago and Buenos Aires, sample the food and perhaps shop for some lapis lazuli jewelry in Chile and leather products in Argentina. The group’s final night dinner in Argentina will include tango lesson–plus a show so we can see how it’s really done.
Recently 15 outstanding students from across the University were selected to serve as 2009 SJSU Salzburg Scholars, including Mariah Martinez (International Business) and Sheeba Saravanan (Finance) funded from the College of Business. They will attend an intensive week-long session on Global Citizenship at the world-renowned Salzburg Global Seminar during the first week of summer (5/29/09-6/5/09) to work with other college students from around the country and broaden their awareness of critical global issues.
Bill DeVincenzi is the recipient of the SJSU Outstanding Lecturer Award for 2008-2009. His work as the Director of the Gary J. Sbona Honors Program and his tireless efforts to network with firms to create internships for the honors students, as well as his dedication as the faculty advisory to the student chapter of the Financial Management Association (FMA), are among his numerous contributions to the Accounting and Finance Department, our College of Business, and University.
